Wageningen – Idealis has begun the development of 249 new student housing units at Campus Oost, an expansion of the university campus in Wageningen. The construction is being carried out by Van Wijnen Arnhem, commissioned by Idealis. This new development marks the first step in transforming Campus Oost into a vibrant area where student housing and knowledge-intensive businesses come together. The housing units are scheduled for completion by the start of the 2026/2027 academic year.

Official Kick-off with Time Capsule

On May 26, the official groundbreaking ceremony took place. To mark the occasion, a time capsule containing messages from various stakeholders was buried. The act was performed by Anne Jansen (Alderman), Rens Buchwaldt (President of Wageningen University & Research), Fabian Bovenlander (Director of Van Wijnen Arnhem), Bart van As (Director/Board Member of Idealis) and Rense Pals on behalf of the tenants' organization SFO. The messages in the capsule emphasized the importance of future-proof student housing—an important challenge, as students’ needs and preferences continue to evolve. Idealis is proud that this new complex contributes to a living environment where future generations can live, study, and collaborate toward a better future.

Construction

Van Wijnen Arnhem is responsible for building the 249 student housing units, in collaboration with Installatie Techniek Nederland (ITN). As part of the project’s realization, the final electricity infrastructure was already incorporated during the foundation phase. This allows for the use of electric construction equipment, such as an electric tower crane, during the building process. The highest point of the structure is expected to be reached in the first quarter of 2026.

Living with Space for Connection

The new development on Mansholtlaan offers 249 modern student housing units with high-quality amenities. Students can live independently or in shared accommodations. The design strongly emphasizes social interaction and community building. Throughout the building, there are various communal spaces, including a shared living room, a study area, and a garden room where residents can meet and connect.

Nature and Climate

Wageningen has ambitious goals when it comes to preserving and protecting nature. These goals are reflected in the project through features such as integrated nesting sites in the building’s facade for birds and bats. Green roofs will be installed to provide food and to delay rainwater drainage. The garden surrounding the building will be planted with vegetation that blooms year-round, ensuring a steady food supply for butterflies and bees. Fruit trees will also be planted, benefiting both wildlife and students. Bart van As: “With this mix of measures, the plan not only addresses the urgent need for student housing, but also contributes to the preservation and protection of our natural environment. To me, this new development is a great example of ‘a different kind of quality, for a different kind of future’—a vision we strive for at Idealis.”
